Professional Development Plan 

Upon completion from the Masters of Counselling program, I will submit my credentials to register with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA). Over the next year, I will continue working to complete outstanding psychology courses that I need to meet the requirements for registration with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP). During this time, I will work as a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC).

Over the next year, I will remain in my position as a Family School Liaison with Rocky View School Division and then transfer into a role of provisional psychologist once I meet the standards for CAP. I will then complete the required 1600 hour placement and prepare for the Ethics Oral and EPPP exams.I will strive to build the skills and competency in the areas of cognitive behavioural therapy, narrative therapy, motivational interviewing, play therapy, expressive arts, and couples/family therapy.

  • Planned Activities: Describe the activities you plan to engage in for learning or enhancing your competency in the upcoming year. 

  1. Register for certification through the CCPA as a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC).  

    • Submit my credentials to CCPA upon commencement.

  2. Begin completion of outstanding psychology courses required to meet CAP requirements. 

    • Register for CAAP 6633 Counselling Issues Across the Life Span (May 2019 start date).

    • Register for self-paced courses through Athabasca University (August 2019 start date).

    • Being process of registering with CAP upon completion of outstanding credits in psychology.

  3. Continue integrating the use of Expressive Arts in my practice while seeking our more training and foundational understanding of the modality.

    • Revisit recent Expressive Arts for Traumatized Children and Adolescents: A Four-Phase Model training and re-read the book of the same (Carmen Richardson).

    • Participate in upcoming training opportunities through Prairie Institute of Expressive Arts as available. 

  4. Begin training in Play Therapy. 

    • Enrol in both Sandplay and the Green Stream training to begin certification through Rocky Mountain Play Therapy Institute. 

  5. Continue to seek out opportunities to complete formal assessments. 

    • When working towards my 1600 hour requirements with CAP, integrate regular assessments as a learning goal (psychoeducaitonal). 

  6. Increase my competency within Violence, Threat, Risk Assessments.

    • Attend the 4th Annual VTRA Conference in Banff in April 2019.

    • Compete the Family Assessment VTRA training with the North American for Threat Assessment and Trauma Response when offered in Alberta. 

  7. Continue to establish a well defined, grounded theoretical orientation that guides my practice and treatment. Work towards increased confidence and competence in the use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.​

    • Revisit previous CBT training (David Burns Intensive Workshop).

    • Reread David Burns Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy.

    • Investigate upcoming training opportunities in CBT (Beck Institute) and Exposure Therapy when offered again by the WCB in Calgary (fall 2019).

  8. Continue development of leadership, opportunities to certify to become a trainer in specific areas.

    • Compete the ‘train-the-trainer’ series to become a certified MANDT trainer (June 24 – 28, 2019).

  9. Offer regular parent sessions to maintain good standing as a Connect Parent group facilitator. ​
    • ​Continue to offer group sessions twice annually (Spring/Fall).
  10. Continue to develop my awareness of countertransference and learn effective ways of management. 
    • ​Continue to engage in ongoing personal counselling. 
    • Seek out counselling in alternative forms and theoretical orientations. 
  11. Engage in opportunities to network with colleagues and professional from other disciplines to expand my understanding and connections. 
    • ​Attend relevant conferences, online webinars, and engage in interdisciplinary practice.
  12. Make self-care a priority. 
    • ​Maintain a healthy work/life balance. 
    • Continue healthy eating practices and engaging in regular physical activity. 
    • Set weekly goals using my gym app and track progress in overall changes in mental and physical wellness through journaling. 
    • Engage in weekly yoga classes (Flow, Yin/Yan, Restorative).
